A measure is the distance between each vertical line. The time signature (4/4) indicates how many beats in each measure and which note gets one beat. The top number is the number of beats in a measure and the bottom number indicates that the quarter note gets one beat. In the beginning, you will probably only have time signatures that end in 4. So, most of the songs you will play in the beginning will have the quarter note as getting one beat. There are also time signatures that end in 8, but we won’t concentrate on those yet. In these playing examples, you will be in C position, meaning that your left most finger is on C and the rest of your fingers will rest on D, E, F and G. These examples are simple illustrations of how basic rhythm and time signatures work. Remember that a quarter note gets one beat, a half note gets two beats, a dotted half note gets three beats, and a whole note gets four beats.
